Leona’s Paintings

My lovely mother-in-law shares my passion for painting (she’s try to get me to share her passion for Mahjong but so far it’s not taking). When she and my father-in-law winter in Florida she spends her time between the beach and the pool and the”club” where she attends all kinds of interesting classes, including art classes.

We were lucky recently to hop through a gap in Coronavirus travel restrictions and visit my husband’s family in Canada for 10 days. Whilst we were there Leona showed me her latest creations and I wanted to share two of them here. She paints on prepared canvas and uses a mostly acrylic and then uses oil to touch up colors and add tones. What struck me about these two paintings was the unity of subject matter, the similarity of color, the big gray skies, the muted tones and the bold geometric shapes. One picture is a barn which I think she painted from a photograph. The second, the picture of the cottage, is from a photo of Leona’s mother’s childhood home in Poland. Together they are simply a beautiful pair.
